Director of Children and Youth Ministries

PURPOSE:  To journey together with our children and youth toward spiritual and community wholeness.

POSITION:  This is a full-time staff position in the Clay Center United Methodist Church
Director of Children and Youth Ministries (grades 1 through 12) 40 hours approximate

SUPERVISION: Staff Parish Relations Committee, Church Coordinator (direct supervision)

The Children and Youth Director will provide spiritual and relational Christian leadership for Clay Center United Methodist children of all grades. The Director will work as a team member under the direct supervision of the Church Coordinator and will work with the Staff Team of Clay Center United Methodist Church to carry out its mission and vision.  The Director will work with the Church Leadership Team and will provide the primary leadership for children and youth programming, along with adult volunteers. This will include weekly children and youth meetings, regularly scheduled classes (Sunday School, Confirmation, etc.); worship inclusion, fellowship programs, and service projects that will include district and conference activities and events.

  • Grow the children and youth ministries by creating an attractive, vibrant, and compelling environment to which our children and youth can invite and attract others to the church.
  • Build and support a team of passionate adult volunteers who provide diverse ability to lead, coach and mentor children and youth.
  • Challenge the children and youth to respond to God’s call to serve in their communities and the world.
  • Build a ministry that engages with local elementary, Middle and High schools in the area and connects with the children and youth in their activities.
  • Love children of all ages for who they are and where they are in their faith journey.


  1. General Education Ministries:
    a. Director will lead, support, and oversee children and youth ministries, in conjunction with the Church Leadership Team.
    b. This leadership role requires the Director to procure & provide training for volunteer teachers, supervisors, and any adults who work with children and Youth. (The Children and Youth Director shall be responsible for ascertaining and maintaining the Great Plains Annual Conference policy regarding background checks & risk management training, currently known as Safe Gatherings for anyone who works with Children and Youth and vulnerable adults.)
    c. The Director of Children and Youth Ministries shall attend & participate in applicable training events when budgeted and approved by the Senior Pastor in advance.
  2. Children and Youth Ministry:
    a. The Director will support, guide, and supervise all children and youth ministries of the church in accordance with the Mission and Vision of the Church.
    b. The Director will lead Wednesday night youth fellowship, which will include periodic service opportunities.  This will also include coordinating and leading youth retreats, youth mission trips and youth fundraising.  The director will also lead youth to participate in the Salina/Hutchinson Districts, & the Great Plains Annual Conference youth events as available.
    c. The Director will order and distribute children and youth curriculum and supplies to the appropriate persons/areas, etc. in order to support children and youth Sunday School.
    d. The Director will teach and/or provide qualified Sunday School teachers for all grades.
    e. The Director will coordinate with the Pastor and the Church Coordinator to provide leadership for the Confirmation program.
    f. The Director will maintain consistent communication with Sunday School superintendents, parents and youth related to all Youth Ministries activities.  This will include an annual event calendar, monthly newsletters, additional email, Facebook, and twitter.
  3. Whole Church Ministry:
    a. The Director will participate in Sunday worship service planning and leadership, especially as it relates to children and youth involvement.
    b. The Director will attend worship services on a regular basis.
    c. The Director may participate in the worship services in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to liturgist, children’s moments, preaching, or providing pulpit supply when asked.
  4. Specialized Care Ministry:
    a. The Director of Children and Youth Ministries will be “Safe Gatherings” certified.
    b. The Director will provide age-appropriate counsel or referrals subject to teen crisis and will follow church policies in all situations.
    c. The Director will take the two-year training program for Youth Directors from Youth Ministry Institute Midwest in Kansas City. (subject to budget approval)
  5. Working Conditions:
    a. The position of Director of Children and Youth Ministries requires organization and flexibility. The hours anticipated each week for this position will be approximately 40
    b. Therefore, it is to be understood that the Director of Children and Youth Ministries will include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Regular days off (2 per week) and vacation (as determined by the Clay Center UMC Policy Manual) will be coordinated with the church coordinator and the Staff Parrish Relations Committee.
    c. Communication with the church coordinator and Staff Parrish Relations Committee can be achieved through personal or electronic communication.
    d. The Director will attend all scheduled staff meetings and is required to meet with the church coordinator once a week to establish a weekly (or longer) schedule.
  6. Desired Qualifications:
    a. Must embrace Christian discipline and United Methodist doctrine and theology.
    b. A bachelor’s degree is preferred in a related field as a minimum requirement.  Professional Certification in Youth Ministry in the United Methodist Church is preferred.
    c. Must have vision and demonstrated ability to plan, develop, coordinate, manage and implement a youth ministry within the parameters of the United Methodist Church.
    d. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, and computer skills.
    e. Must possess a proven ability to work effectively with children, youth, diverse individuals, and teams of volunteers.
    f. Previous experience leading a youth ministry program is preferred.
