The MCC men's basketball team knocked off Ozark Christian College 90-81 on Friday night to clinch at least a share of the Midwest Christian College Conference for the seventh consecutive season. Both teams got off to a strong start on the offensive, and late in the first half Ozark opened up a 42-31 lead. MCC responded with a 12-2 run to close the halftime deficit to 44-43.
MCC was able to take the lead early in the second half at 50-48 and from that point on they would never relinquish the lead. The Crusaders stretched the lead to 65-57, but Ozark responed with a 6-0 run to close the deficit to 65-63. With MCC leading 72-70, Lonnie Penner keyed a 7-0 run by scoring five points to push the lead to 79-70 and from that point on Ozark would not get any closer than seven points. Penner led the team with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Freshmen David Frost had a career-high 15 points, while Josh Camacho scored 14 points, Sage Ruis chipped in with 13 points. Point guard Jack Mitchell scored 12 points and dished out 11 assists against only 1 turnover.
MCC defeated Calvary 78-56 on Saturday to claim the outright Conference Championship. MCC came out with a strong first-half performance jumping out to a 50-18 halftime lead. In the second half MCC struggled with turnovers, but was still able to hold on for the victory. Penner again led MCC with 18 points, while Bryce Birtell added 12 points and Alex Hammack and Ben Svorinic each scored 11 points.
MCC finished conference play at 9-1, and they are currently 16-9 overall. This week MCC has three key region games at home as they take on Grace University Tuesday, Central Bible College on Friday and Baptist Bible College on Saturday.
