Alumni and friends are cordially invited to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Manhattan Christian College.
The groundbreaking for the Activity Center, the future home of Thunder Athletics, is scheduled for Friday, August 26, 2016, 3:00 p.m. on the east side of the Coffin Memorial Campus Center. Immediately following the program, refreshments will be available on the basketball slab.
Mabee Foundation Challenge Grant
The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Oklahoma has awarded a $600,000 challenge grant in support of the Next Generation Campaign and the construction of an Activity Center on the MCC campus.
To receive the Mabee grant, MCC alumni and friends must also generously support the effort. The challenge has these conditions:
- MCC has a total of $3 million raised before April 12, 2017 in order for the Mabee foundation to provide the final $600,000 to complete the total needed.
- The new funds are private gifts from alumni and friends of the college.
Announced in April 2015, Next Generation is a 3-year capital campaign with three strategic goals.
1. Improve the campus first impression.
2. Build a multi-purpose Activity Center.
3. Enhance campus technology and security.
The largest of the three priorities, construction of an Activity Center, will benefit student life programming, provide a home for Thunder athletics, eliminate the need to rent city facilities, and upgrade the space available for leadership training events. The Activity Center will be a 16,500 square foot building at the corner of 14th and Laramie.
Since 1947, MCC has rented city facilities for student life activities and college events. Special ministry events and educational programming brings more than 3,200 guests and participants to MCC each year. Without a large physical space on campus, registrations for conferences, seminars, and banquets are limited or are held off-campus.
Despite not having any athletic facilities on campus, 35% of the student body is involved in the athletic program that has been consistently recognized nationally. MCC competes in eight varsity sports in the National Christian College Athletic Association and the Midwest Christian College Conference. To date, MCC has won 10 National Championships, 37 NCCAA Regional Championships, and 53 MCCC Championships. In addition, 76 of our Thunder athletes have been recognized as First Team All-Americans.
Intramural programming involves 23% of the student body participating in fun and competitive team building activities throughout the year. The students carpool or drive their own car to participate since none of the rented city facilities are within walking distance of campus.
Unlimited access to a large multi-purpose Activity Center on campus will enable MCC to recruit more students, retain more students, and enhance leadership training both inside and outside the classroom. It will become the hub for both structured and unstructured activities, social interaction, and relationship building.
Help us reach the finish line of this campaign today!
Every gift is important and brings the college that much closer to providing the new ministry tools needed to meet the changing needs of the student body and to better fulfill the mission of the college.
