Director Student Financial Services – VA Certifying Official

Job Description

To support the college in meeting its missions to Educate, Equip, and Enrich Christian leaders by assisting the new and returning students in finding multiple avenues to fund a college education. The Director is responsible for the compliance with all federal and state laws as well as the institutional policies regarding student financial aid.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the College’s faith statement, mission, and purposes; and desires to be a role model for students through an active Christian faith.
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of financial aid experience.
  • Proven Ability to be pro-active in accomplishing goals; self-motivated.
  • Extensive knowledge of Student Financial Aid and professional practices within the field.
  • Ability to work effectively with personnel from federal, state and local agencies and lending institutions.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex federal regulations and transmit their implementation into institutional policy.
  • Proven ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well, both written and orally, with individuals from various backgrounds, especially students and their families.
  • Ability to always present a pleasant, courteous, and service oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision, to begin projects independently, and to bring projects to conclusion on a timely basis.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct all activities to ensure that the college is in compliance with all federal laws and regulations regarding financial aid and institutions of higher learning, to ensure a clean annual audit.
  • Supervise the Financial Aid Counselor(s).
  • Maintain a policies and procedures manual for the financial aid department.  Make required decisions or proposals based on those policies.
  • Represent the financial aid department on appropriate college committees.
  • Lead the financial aid staff in accomplishing institutional and departmental goals in a manner that allows individual employees to grow professionally.
  • Oversee the awarding, disbursement and reconciliation process of all financial aid available at MCC, including, but not limited to:
    • Government aid (federal and state)
    • Institutional Aid
    • Employer reimbursements
    • Veteran Affairs benefits
    • Outside scholarships.
  • Complete and submit all required federal, state and institutional reports in a timely manner.
  • Pro-active in searching for alternative forms of financial aid that will benefit students.
  • Maintaining the Veteran’s Affairs on campus.
  • Certifying all student records in a timely manner as well as counseling students regarding their VA benefits.
  • Perform revisions to financial aid awards according to federal, state, and institutional requirements due to changes in enrollment status, requests for changes in award, and other special revision projects.
  • Monitors individual student awards, resolves data conflicts, and/or over-awards.
  • Performs Satisfactory Academic Progress assessments and informs any affected party.
  • Performs the assessment of any requested adjustment to a student’s federal application for financial aid.
  • Monitor all aspects of federal Title IV financial aid programs through several federal sites and reconcile accordingly.
  • Manage the overall operation of the Financial Aid Office.
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Vice President for Financial and Administrative Services

Working Relationships:

  • Responsible to the Vice President for Financial and Administrative Services.
  • Due to a team working environment in the FAS Office, clear lines of communication among, and an expectation of working with, all FAS personnel are necessary.
  • Admissions personnel depend on reliable and timely assistance from the financial aid staff. Clear lines of communication and an expectation of working on a cross-departmental team are necessary.
  • The Registrar’s office and Student Financial aid rely on each other to maintain legally required student information. Open and clear lines of communication are a high expectation of working on this cross-departmental team.
  • The Director of Financial Aid will represent the entire office to outside entities, businesses and within the financial aid community. A Christ like representation of our attitude and actions are vital.
  • The Director is encouraged to attend events and activities that promote professional growth.
  • It is expected that as a Christian, words, actions, and relationships on and off campus will at all times be for His Glory.

Working Environment:

  • Fast paced work area which can become noisy, crowded, and stressful during peak enrollment times.
  • Sitting for extended hours at a desk.
  • Primarily working on computer.
  • Minimal lifting required, 20-30 lbs.
